by ANEEKA WARD

NIKKI RIFKIN, 40, MASTER TEACHER, BAR METHOD LA & MANAGING DIRECTORY OF BAR METHOD BRENTWOOD

Los Angeles, California

ON HEALTH AND BEAUTY

“I believe in all around beauty. Beauty doesn’t just start or stop with your skin. There are many factors, and it’s not all about what’s on the surface. Part of staying beautiful is staying healthy. Being healthy is taking care of you, your mind, and your body. Bar Method keeps me in my best physical shape. It is truly one of the most effective workouts there is! The intense level of focus it takes to remain in proper form allows for you to not think about any daily stresses going on in your life. A true one-hour gift devoted to the whole well being of you.

ON THE EVOLUTION OF HER SKINCARE

My skincare has changed significantly since my teens, mostly because of moving to sunny Los Angeles where you really get no break from the sun. In my teens I had it easy, mostly just washing my face and making sure I used moisturizer. I took my good skin for granted, that’s for sure!

When I got a modelling contract and moved to LA at the age of 19, that’s when I really understood the importance of using sunscreen. I’m not going to lie though; I haven’t really been religious about daily use of it until the last few years.   I am really conscious of how my skin changes as I mature, and I have become a total product junkie. My skin priorities are line reduction, hydration, and rejuvenation. After many trials, and certainly thousands of dollars, I have finally narrowed it down to these top six favourites. They help create the best version of me I can get! Come on, what’s a girl gotta do?!

ON THE GLOW

I’m all about glowing skin.

I discovered Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate a few weeks ago and it is amazing. It is a mixture of pure essential oils and I honestly saw immediate, drastic results with my skin the first time I used it. The morning after I used it my skin was radiant. It’s a game changer. If I forget to use this at night I regret not using it in the morning.

Since I had such success with the recovery concentrate I decided to introduce the Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate (packed with Vitamin C) to help with fine lines and wrinkles into the mix. I am already seeing a massive change in my skin between the combination of the two products – healthier skin, improved texture, hydration, and overall glow.

I use this combination twice a day, morning and night. For my nighttime routine I first apply the Powerful Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate onto clean skin, followed by the Midnight Recovery Concentrate and then finish with moisturizer.

At night I use Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Moisturizer to improve my skin hydration. It’s technically a “youth regenerating cream” made of a rare resurrection flower that’s only found in the desert. The flower grabs and holds onto any moisture or water in its natural environment. It apparently does the same for water when it’s used on your face, especially for people needing or looking for more hydration for their skin. At Kiehl’s in LA they have two tests that they can perform to check for skin dehydration. My skin tests showed I was quite dehydrated. I’m awful about drinking water, so not surprised. I’m trying, always trying, to drink more water. Why can’t our skin be hydrated from wine consumption? I would be golden! I love this cream because it feels like it’s working as soon as you put it on. This isn’t very thick, and I am someone who generally likes a thicker cream for nighttime. If I weren’t using it with my other two products I would probably wish it were heavier, but when used as the last step in my nighttime regime it’s like applying silk to my skin for my finishing touch.

My morning routine is the same, except instead of using the Kiehl’s Midnight Revival Concentrate I use the Kiehl’s Daily Revival Concentrate, which is the daytime version of the oil, and my Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 Moisturizer. I’ve used this Dermalogica moisturizer for years. I love this one because of how smoothly it goes on and how it actually helps create a dewy skin glow when you apply makeup on top of it. Using an SPF is vital to the health of your skin; especially for someone like me living in sunny LA. It’s the number one reason our skin ages, so it makes no sense to use all these oils and serums if we aren’t protecting it from the one thing that causes it the most harm.

I use Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter in Honeysuckle Vanilla to moisturize the rest of my body. It’s insane. Literally makes the skin on your entire body glow. No joke. I came across it accidentally; my friend didn’t like the smell of it so threw it across the room at me one day to take it [laughs]. It is now my obsession. It can seem pricey, for the size, but I assure you that you barely need much of it. One application lasts forever and I don’t need to reapply until after my next shower.”
