ANGIE CAMBARERI, 36 YEARS OLD, CO-OWNER VINCENT BOUTIQUE

Ottawa, Ontario

ON HER BEAUTY GRASSROOTS

“As a little girl I was always in the bathroom watching my mom get ready. My earliest memory of makeup would be when I was in Europe, probably around 11 years old, watching my mom put on her mascara and eyeliner. I remember it vividly. It was Estee Lauder’s eyeliner in Iconic Blue, which basically defined the early 90s. I asked if I could have some, she said yes, and that’s when my affair with beauty began. In high school I constantly read fashion magazines and was forever going out and buying new beauty products to try. When I was 18 I decided to make a career out of my passion and went to cosmetology school; at 20 I entered the beauty industry as a Makeup Artist. I’ve worked with Bobbi Brown for almost 14 years. I still work for them as a key freelancer for special beauty events in Ottawa at places like Nordstrom and Sephora.

ON BLENDING BEAUTY WITH FASHION

My sister Amanda and I opened Vincent almost 3 years ago. Our store is a lifestyle boutique that caters to the everyday woman. The fashion world in Ottawa can be very small, and our mandate is to only carry certain pieces in limited sizes and quantity. That way when a customer leaves the store they can rest assured they are leaving with a piece that is uniquely theirs. Chances are once we’re sold out of a piece it wont be in the store again for purchase, as we want only a select few to have it. As human beings we all want to be unique, we all want to be a little different, and as a small boutique that’s a goal we are trying to help people accomplish.

Along with clothing and accessories, Vincent also provides makeup application services and hosts beauty events. My makeup clients will typically come into the boutique to have me help them sort out their makeup questions and concerns, or to simply have me help them get ready for an upcoming event. We want to use Vincent as a platform to help women and ideally expand the dialogue beyond, but still inclusive of, fashion. I’m very blessed and very fortunate to have the opportunity to blend fashion and beauty together. I believe the two truly go hand in hand. It is a dream of ours to grow into having a beauty corner in the store and carry a full skin care line.

I love Darphin Oils. I have a lot of them; I’m not going to lie. Darphin’s Tangerine Aromatic Care Essential Oil is my favourite because of its ability to make my skin look bright, radiant, fresh, and for the fact it evens out my skins texture and tone. I’ve used it 2-3 times per week for the past 2 years after I first came across it working at Holt Renfrew. I use it when my skin is feeling dry and needs help rehydrating. It can be used either the morning or at night because it absorbs quickly. It doesn’t make your skin look oily or cause you to break out. I typically apply the Darphin oil after I wash and tone my skin and before I moisturize. I put a dot of the oil my forehead, cheeks, and neck and massage it into my skin counter clockwise with my fingers. You really do not need a lot of this product. About half a dime to a dime sized amount should cover your entire face and neck. One bottle lasts me roughly about 6 months. If I were having a day when I don’t want to apply any makeup or moisturizer, I use the oil by itself and let it nourish my skin. If you want to get the maximum benefit of this product, I would spend time massaging this into your skin until it absorbs. The massage opens up the glands in your skin, stimulates blood flow and allows the product to do its job. This oil truly makes my skin glow from the inside out.

If I could say one thing about my Dove Curls Mousse, it would be that it works. I came across it by chance on sale for $3.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart one day after running out of my professional grade mousse. I’m so glad I decided to give it a chance. I’ve gone through a lot of different mousse products over the years to help tame my heavy, curly hair. This mousse defines my curls, reduces frizz, and is so lightweight that it feels like I’m not using anything. I use this mousse after I wash my hair, usually only once per week, or after re-wetting my hair to re-style it. A handful of this product takes care of my entire head. Its what I count on to keep my curls looking good!

My Da’lish Matte Collection Lipstick in shade L04 is an essential for me. We carry this brand in store because it is a natural and organic line manufactured and packaged in Toronto. With the increased awareness nowadays about toxic substances in our makeup, people are being more mindful of what they are ingesting or putting on their skin. It is a great line and it stands up to what it claims it does. Its staying power and longevity are good, and I find it actually hydrates my lips, which is unique for a matte lipstick. This lipstick doesn’t bleed, the texture is great, and it tastes like chocolate!

Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation Stick is my security blanket. I use it almost every day and only need to replace it once every one to two years. The beautiful thing about this stick is that you have full control over how much coverage you want to get from it. A solid product can intimidate people sometimes, as most of us are more familiar with a liquid product for foundation. Stick foundation gives you the control to place it wherever you need it the most. To get a more sheer look I apply it to my cheeks and t-zone before allowing my moisturizer to fully settle, and for more coverage I use it with my tinted moisturizer. I also use it to touch up a blemish when using other foundations. I love using my fingers to apply because the product warms up to the temperature of my fingers and skin causing it to instantaneously blend. Bobbi has a non-silicon based primer built into her products so you can go straight from moisturizing your skin to using this stick. It’s great for travelling serves multi-purposes, meaning you can even use it as a concealer or highlighter. They have around 13-14 different shades available so there is a wide variety to choose from. The easiest way to get Bobbi in Canada is from Nordstrom, Sephora, or BobbiBrownCosmetics.ca

In my opinion, the texture and coverage of Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer Kit doesn’t compare to any other concealer out there. I have the application of this concealer down to a science. To start, I apply my concealer under my eyes with my fingers. You know when they say makeup looks best 15-20 minutes after you put it on? It is because your skin has warmed up to the product and you’ve absorbed some of it so it looks like second skin. However, often what happens is that our concealer settles into this one crease we all have under our eyes. To get rid of that line, you have to reposition the product back place by patting it back into your skin with your fingers. It’s a habit of mine that every time I get into my car I look at my makeup application, see that line, pat it out, and then that crease never comes back. Only once you have done this should you set your concealer with powder. However, this concealer is pretty amazing on its own and personally, I don’t need to set it with anything!”
