ON THE ART OF MAKEUP
“Makeup to me is a beautiful and artistic way to communicate my personality and emotions with others. It’s always been fun for me to play around with different styles and colours. It can make a simple outfit look amazing, or a fancy one look effortless. I admire the makeup artists I have worked with immensely. They can create characters simply by the way they arch a brow or how smoky they make an eye. I’ve learned a lot from each of them about what works for different faces and how to enhance my own features. Makeup can change my mood. I love how just by being able to create an even skin tone or the perfect messy bun can lift my spirits. It’s like what Coco Chanel said, ‘If you are sad, add more lipstick and attack!’
ON HER SKINCARE PRIORITIES AS AN ACTRESS
My skin holds up pretty well considering the amount of makeup I have to wear for work, but I have always been disciplined with removing it. On a regular day I keep my makeup simple, maybe a bright lipstick for a pop of colour. Sometimes I’ll add eyeliner if it’s a special occasion for a bit of drama. My skincare priorities include keeping an even skin tone, staying out of the sun and anti age prevention within reason, of course.
TOP 5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS
I wasn’t big on face masks until I tried SK-II’s Facial Treatment Masks. I depend on these to help with the smoothening and brightening of my skin. I first tried this product off a friend’s recommendation, but also because the beautiful Cate Blanchett is the face of this line. I apply this mask once a week, maybe even more if I feel like my skin has had a rough few days. It is pretty simple to use. It is one of those scary paper face masks that sit in a pouch of magical liquid. Once I apply the mask I leave it on my face until I feel it’s dry. It doesn’t have a scent, which I prefer, and it soothes my skin with a pleasant cooling sensation. As an added bonus, there is often formula left over in the pouch. I put that excess formula in a Ziplock bag to use in the following nights as extra treatments. I buy a 10 pack of these masks at Sephora and find it is great alternative to monthly facials that won’t break the bank.
I am no makeup wizard; it took me forever to perfect winged eyeliner! That being said, my MAC Prep and Prime BB Beauty Balm is my best friend. I use it as my foundation and it is very user friendly. To use I squeeze a small pea sized amount onto the back of my hand and use my fingers to blend it in. It gives me light to moderate coverage and feels like a moisturizer, which is so lovely. I find the colour matches my skin tone perfectly. I get enough coverage with this BB cream to create an even skin tone, but don’t have to deal with the density and weight of a foundation. Before a MAC makeup artist introduced me to this product, I was primarily accustomed to the foundations that were used on set at work. While I love the coverage of my work makeup, I don’t like the weight for everyday use. I especially love the added bonus of this BB cream containing SPF35. It ensures the protection of my skin – an essential when living in LA.
I’ve never been a hair buff, but I always liked the seemingly effortless beach hair vibe. I’ve had my NUME Hair Curler for about 3 months now, and I use it at least 4 times a week to achieve that look. It’s perfect because its bigger barrel size allows for a great, natural looking curl to be created instead of those awkward super tight, coiled curls. It is the perfect tool for someone like me who isn’t the best creating flawless hairstyles but wants to add a bit of flare to my everyday look. Also, if you’re on a budget, I have some good news for you. One day on Instagram I saw an ad showing that NUME was having a mega sale, and I got it for only $40 USD, including shipping! Best $40 I’ve spent in a long time.
When bold brows came back in style I was so happy! I’ve always been committed to keeping naturally strong eyebrows. As you can imagine, along with the desire to possess thick eyebrows comes the responsibility of finding a good brush to keep them all in line. My Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer takes care of both taming unruly hair and giving my brows that extra bit of oomph. It has a thicker angled pencil, which gives a better and bolder look to my eyebrows compared to other pencils. Thinner pencils don’t go on as naturally for me. The definer eliminates the need for you to buy a separate brush as this pencil comes with its own. The brush on this pencil is amazing!
I’m a huge fan of the 40’s. To me, it was the most beautiful time period for women in makeup and fashion. Red lips were such a signature look of that time, and luckily for me a red lip always pairs well with my fair skin. At least once a week I’ll throw on my Lady Danger MAC Lipstick. I really like this lipstick because it isn’t too glossy, has good staying power and the matte look makes it wearable in the daytime. I use the REDD Liner from MAC to give it a good solid edge. I love that this shade isn’t your traditional red; it has a hint of orange that modernizes the classic blood red look.”
