ON HER LOVE FOR FASHION AND BEAUTY

“I’ve always had a love for both fashion and beauty, but was able to embrace my love for fashion earlier on in life. Being of Middle Eastern background, half Lebanese and half Assyrian, came a huge close-knit family and numerous social events. I started getting dressed and dolled up at a young age as both of my cultures prided themselves in being well presented. Our multitude of social events would inevitably turn into fashion shows. My mom also played a big part in my love for fashion and beauty. To this day, I don’t think I know anybody who owns more cosmetics, clothing, shoes and handbags. For the past several years, she worked for Holt Renfrew and consequently, I gladly was transported into that world. I also found shopping to be an outlet throughout all of my years in University. I would study for hours and then give myself online shopping breaks as motivation. As I reflect, it might not have been the greatest idea at the time, but it kept me sane! I couldn’t dress up often during my training, being often stuck in scrubs or white coats, so I jumped at any chance to do so.

ON THE BEST PART OF MAKEUP

I first started using makeup in high school, right around the time when self-esteem can really become an issue. I found myself receiving compliments when I wore it and it helped combat feelings of insecurity. I love how makeup can really help boost your self-confidence and truly make you feel your best. For the past few years, I’ve had to deal with adult acne and the terrible scars it leaves behind. Makeup has definitely helped me feel beautiful and has allowed me to bring my best face forward in my everyday life. I also love how much fun you can have with it by trying different looks. You can be subtle and classic or take risks, be bold, and really make a statement.

I use my Laura Mercier Silk Crème Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation every day for flawless skin. I fell in love with it the first time I tried it at Holt Renfrew. This foundation gives me heavy coverage without any creasing or looking caked on. I think what makes it different compared to other heavy coverage foundations is that it has a moisturizing component, which prevents it from cracking at the end of the day. It is a cream foundation, which I prefer to liquid ones as I find them more difficult to apply. To use, I simply take 2 pea-sized amounts of product and use a blending sponge to apply it on my face. To complete the look, I will typically use concealer on my problem areas and follow up with Laura Mercier’s Mineral Powder in Dusty Rose to blend things in and soften the look. One bottle of this product lasts me approximately 6 months, sometimes more.

I love the long lasting wear and strong pigment of my Kat Von D Everlasting Lipstick. I wear it a couple of times of a week, mostly when I’m going out or on weekends. A cousin of mine was wearing the shade Love Sick at a bachelorette party we were at together in Las Vegas. I loved the color and the fact that it lasted all night so much that I quickly went out to buy and try other shades. Love Sick is a sweeter colour that can be worn to complement both daytime and evening looks and has become a go-to for me. My other go-to I find very flattering for my skin tone is Lolita. Lolita is a little darker and more dramatic. I wear it when I want to make a bold statement. I love that this lipstick goes on easily like a lip-gloss but dries on matte. I wouldn’t say that it is drying but if you do have dry lips, you are better off applying Vaseline, my personal favorite, or a lip balm prior to putting it on. I find doing this helps the product appear smoother on the lips. Lip liner is definitely not necessary with this lipstick. However, I often apply lip liner to the entire lip before applying any lipstick. I find it creates a good base that makes my lipstick application easier and the color last longer. This lipstick really does last for hours!

I use my Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge daily for my cheeks and occasionally on my lips. This was one of many cosmetic gifts I received from my mother – I’ve been spoiled that way! I love the ease of application as well as the staying power it has in comparison to conventional powder blushes. It is quite simple to use. I gently tap on the product with a clean fingertip, lightly dab it onto my cheekbone and then blend it into my skin with my fingers. I apply a very thin layer of the product the same way onto my lips. It gives a more subtle look versus typical lipstick. I have had my pot rouge for over a year; I think I will have to throw it out before I actually finish it!

My Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil helps with frizz control and leaves my hair looking healthy and shiny. I use it every time I wash my hair regardless if I am leaving it curly or straightening it. I have naturally dry, curly, coarse hair and this product definitely makes it softer and more manageable. It has cut back my blow-drying time as well as the use of my flat iron, which has saved my hair from a lot of unnecessary damage. After I shower I will apply 1 pump of the oil to my damp, towel-dried hair with my hands. I then allow my hair to air-dry a little bit and then will blow it out with a large round brush. If I am looking for more shine or if I am having a really frizzy day, I take one more pump of product and run it through my hair from mid-shaft to the ends. This oil gives me great value, considering how little of this I need to use, and that I have already had it for almost 1 year with half a bottle remaining. I had initially bought it at Holt Renfrew, but since the Ottawa store closed, I have found Oribe products at Luxe Spa on Clyde Ave in Ottawa. Did I mention it also smells amazing?!

Thankfully I received Marc Jacobs’ O!Mega Bronzer as part of a birthday gift from my girls because I use it every day! Since foundation and mineral powder tend to create a very uniform look to the face, I find this bronzer helps restore a more natural appearance by bringing back dimension. The colour of this bronzer is great, not too dark but dark enough to provide a noticeable glow. I apply it with a medium round brush starting around the middle of my jaw then up towards my cheekbones, over the nasal bridge and then finishing with a quick sweep to my forehead and chin. It is a product I’ve had for about a year now and is still full. I love how huge this bronzer is! I did have a mishap a couple of months ago where I dropped it and it broke. Fortunately, using a technique I learnt from a beauty blogger, I was able to salvage the bronzer using the broken fragments and some rubbing alcohol. It amazingly created a paste that I could return into the casing to dry overnight. It has been like new ever since!”
