BEAUTY INTERVIEW: Top 5 with Veronica Orru

Montreal, Quebec

“My skincare priorities involve keeping my skin and pores clear, healthy and breathable. I am a religious mask user. I really love using skincare products that I can see immediate visible results with because I hate the feeling of unclean, greasy skin. My mother used to tell me to treat my skin as if it were a garden. If I didn’t take care of it, mushrooms and weeds could start to grow and destroy it.

I was never really interested in beauty as a child especially since I was technically not allowed to wear makeup until the age of 16. My mom would get upset with me if I even put the littlest bit of it on my face because she said it would destroy my young skin. She was however really great about getting me into a good skincare routine as she took excellent care of her skin. When I was going through puberty I struggled with oily skin and she was the one that helped me and made sure I was using the right cleansers to manage the problem. It was around age 21 that I started to develop more of an interest in the makeup side of beauty. I know that’s pretty late but ever since I’ve gotten pretty into it and have watched tons of tutorials on how to do it properly.

I had been using a coal mask regularly as I had heard that coal is known for clearing out facial pores extremely well. However, it is really important for me to try and use cruelty-free products, so once I came across the Coalface Cleanser by the cruelty-free company Lush, I immediately fell in love. I use this cleanser twice a day: in the morning when I wake up and in the evening before I go to bed. I love the feeling of fresh skin before going to sleep. This cleanser looks like a bar of hand soap. I use it by rubbing the bar between my palms under running water until a bit of foam appears. I then massage my face with it focusing on areas where my pores prone to build up dirt such as my nose, chin, and cheeks. My skin looks shinier and clearer since I’ve been using this product. I love to touch my face after using it because it feels so soft. It’s super efficient and is also the only cleanser that doesn’t give me a rash after I use it.

The Lush Mask of Magnaminty is my go-to face mask for when I feel my skin needs an extra deep cleanse. I use it 2-3 times per week to help exfoliate and refresh my skin. Like I mentioned before, I have oily skin, which tends to catch a lot of dirt, especially since I live in a big city where there is a ton of car exhaust. Before I use this mask I always rinse my face first so my skin is slightly damp to make the application easier as this product is a slightly chunky one. It has a light minty scent to it and is very comfortable to use. Personally, I like to be able to feel the effect of a mask once it’s applied to my skin, and this one gives my face a light tingle after I apply it which tells me that it’s doing its job.   I massage it lightly on my skin and let it dry for 5-15 minutes depending on how much time I have. If I’m in a rush I leave it on for 5 minutes and if I’m not I leave it until it dries on my skin. Once the desired time has passed I rinse my face with warm water. This mask comes off super easy and you don’t have to really scrub the product off, which is nice. I love that this mask has a longer expiry date compared to other Lush masks. Before an employee recommended this one to me, I had been using a mask theirs that had a 4-week expiry date. I had to keep it in the fridge and found it annoying to have to walk back and forth from the fridge every time I wanted to use and frustrating if it expired before I had a chance to use it all because it felt like I was throwing money away. I bought this mask before I moved to Canada in July, and now we’re in January and I still have some left. For the results that it gives to my skin, it’s definitely worth the price.

Tarte’s Drink of H20 Moisturizer is the only hydrating cream I’ve found that keeps my skin dry and not oily. It really helps with my makeup application as it prevents greasiness, which often ends up destroying the look I’m going for. I use this twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. You need the smallest bit of product for one application. I usually put three small dots along my t-zone and that’s more than enough. The first time I used it I thought I needed a lot so I applied eight dots of the moisturizer on my face. That was the worst idea ever because my face became super shiny and I had to wait for a really long time to let it absorb. I am really impressed at how such a tiny amount of this cream can moisturize your skin so well. It absorbs quickly, but if you put too much on you may have to wait a bit. I started with small samples of the product redeemed with Sephora points and ended up going back multiple times for more. Each tiny container lasted me a month. I’ve since moved over to a full-sized container and it looks untouched after four weeks of consistent use. It’s not like an ordinary moisturizing cream; this one is special. Tarte is also known for its oil-free and cruelty-free products, which is a bonus. It was love at first sight. My skin feels hydrated and protected with this moisturizer.

I rely on my Nars All Day Luminous Powder Foundation for light, natural matte coverage. I wear this foundation whenever I put makeup on. I mostly apply it on top of my cream foundations or cc creams. I find with my oily skin that cream foundations tend to leave the surface of my skin feeling tacky. Using this powder on top of my cream foundations makes my skin feel silky smooth and free from grease and stickiness.   I apply this foundation with a big round brush making big circles of my skin. I tap the brush two or three times on the product and cover my whole face until it’s not sticky anymore. I don’t really need that much to cover my face. This product doesn’t feel heavy on my skin like other foundations have in the past and I really like the coverage I get. I love the fact it doesn’t come off that easily and that it keeps my makeup looking fresh after many hours of wearing it.

I’m always impressed after coming home after a long day, which occasionally may include a nap, and have the eyeshadow I applied from my Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eye Palette still look perfect. I love the natural colours that this palette offers because they match perfectly with my olive skin tone. I haven’t come close to finishing it yet and I’ve had it for a really long time now. The colours are very pigmented and really blendable which gives me the chance to create both natural and glam looks with it. Plus, they Too Faced uses antioxidant-rich cocoa powder and it smells like chocolate – amazing! I also love the fact that this palette is not just a one-sided eye palette with standard colours you find in other kits but that it also has some glitter and matte shadows as well as other colours you’d never expect like pink and orange. In my opinion, this cruelty-free brand is always worth the price. Have I mentioned most of their products smell like chocolate? I think I’m addicted to the smell of chocolate…”

  1. I’m loving the concept of this blog. I don’t know why but as someone with a passion for skin care I love reading what other women my age like to use, and I hope to learn a thing or two while doing so. Big fan of Lush over here so naturally this interview spoke to me. I too use Coalface and Mask of Magnaminty (Gosh, I love that one so much). I love that its self-preserving too. Way easier.
