BEAUTY INTERVIEW: Top 5 with Angela Moretti

Boston, Massachusetts

“The best piece of beauty advice I’ve ever received is to take care of my skin. Washing my makeup off before bed, wearing sunscreen during the day, having a proper skin care regime, and drinking a lot of water. Good skin care is essential to aging gracefully and can slow down the effects of aging and of our environment on our skin. I always say it’s easier to prevent skin problems now than it is to treat them in the future, so I make sure to take extra good care of my skin.

My biggest beauty regret would be getting my eyebrows waxed by someone that didn’t specialize in waxing in high school. I used to go to my local nail salon to get them done, and they really thinned out my brows. It really shows when I look back at old photos. I learned in beauty school that Cosmetologists and Estheticians, not Manicurists, are the only people licensed in waxing. I’m so glad hair grows back because I was eventually able to get my natural shape back, but it took a while.

This is actually kind of funny; when I was in fourth grade I used to always carry a travel-sized bottle of hair spray to school in my backpack. I was super obsessed with slicked back hair back then. I remember using it in class one day to get pretty for recess. My teacher was in the middle of a lesson at the time, totally saw me and then ended up giving me detention for it. I still laugh about this memory to this day, I’ll never forget it!

I follow Too Faced on Instagram and would always read comments about how much people love their Better Than Sex Mascara. So, I decided to give it a try and now use it every single time I do my makeup. I wasn’t blessed with super full lashes, so the fact that this mascara both lengthens and thickens them is the main reason I will always go back to this product. It takes me a minimum of 2 coats of mascara to get the look I like. Sometimes when I’m done applying my makeup, I go back and curl my lashes and apply a third coat. This product is definitely pricier than a drug store brand, but I think it’s worth it. I wear a full face of makeup maybe 3 times a week so a tube can last me around 3 months.

After moisturizing and priming my face, the first makeup product I put on is Bobbi Brown’s Corrector in ‘light bisque’. I love how this neutralizes my dark circles! I have a one-year-old daughter so this corrector makes it look like I got a full night of sleep, even though I probably didn’t. It’s like a cup of coffee for my face. It’s very easy to use. Before I apply my concealer, I’ll use my ring finger to get the corrector out of the container and dab enough of it on to cover up any discoloration. I also love how this product causes zero caking. It is infused with skin conditioners so if anything, I feel like it moisturizes my under eye area. This product has amazing coverage so I don’t need much of it to see a difference. It can easily last me 6 months, if not a little longer. I’ve been using this product for almost 3 years now and it is seriously a game changer. I wish I had known about it sooner.

I call Image Skincare’s The Max – Stem Cell Masque a facial in a bottle. Anytime I use this mask my skin ends up feeling so smooth and hydrated, literally as if I just got off the Esthetician’s table. I rely on this mask to help brighten and revitalize dull skin, especially in the winter. I tend to use this mask twice a week, but you can use it up to four times per week if you really wanted to. To use I take about a quarter-sized amount of product and apply it in a circular motion with my fingers all over my face and neck. I leave it on for about 10-15 minutes, so I like to put it on right before I hop in the bathtub to relax. This product has a nice, neutral scent that I like. Sometimes when masks are too fragrant they make me sick, so I much prefer it this way. It is very comfortable to use and doesn’t burn or tingle at all. As it is a professional product, you can only purchase it from salons or spas that carry the line. For me, there is great value in this product for the price. The appearance of my skin is something I will always invest in. I feel like the better my skin is, the less money I have to spend on makeup to conceal imperfections.

I’ve been using Matrix Biolage Colorlast Shampoo & Conditioner for the last 5 years. I wash my hair every other day and this is the only product I use in the shower for my hair. I only use about a quarter size amount of each product so a bottle easily lasts me 6 months. I love this product because it helps maintain my hair colour depth, tone, and shine of my hair much better than other products I’ve tried, which means fewer trips to the salon for touch-ups. Plus, I have very fine hair and I’ve noticed this shampoo and conditioner is quite lightweight and doesn’t weigh my hair down. Since I’m a licensed esthetician I can buy Biolage from Cosmoprof, a wholesale store specifically for licensed beauty professionals. If you don’t have your license and your salon doesn’t carry this brand, you can also get it online or from Ulta.

I had been looking for a product to add texture and fullness to my hair after I’m done styling it, and luckily I was recommended Joico’s Hair Shake Finishing Texturizing Spray. After I’m done curling my hair and allow it to cool, I only need to spray 3 pumps of this product on my head and tousle my hair to give me the messy-beachy curled look that I love. It’s as simple as that. After using the texturizer, I add a few spritzes of hair spray to hold my look in place, and then I’m good to go. This product also adds volume to my hair while simultaneously leaving it super-soft and not crunchy at all. Without this stuff, my hair goes flat as soon as I walk out of the house. It is definitely a lifesaver for my hair.”
