ON THE DEFINITION OF BEAUTY
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love how anything and anyone can be considered beautiful depending on the perception of that particular individual. Makeup is a form of expressing yourself without ever having to say a word – it speaks for you.
ON HER SKINCARE PRIORITIES
I’ve recently started to get some chronic adult acne and dry skin all at once, so I’m currently striving for a smooth and clear complexion. I spent my entire teenage years with zero to little acne and used to get complimented frequently on my skin. The best beauty advice I’ve received is to get 8 full hours of sleep, so that’s also high up on my priorities list.
ON HER BIGGEST BEAUTY REGRET
I’d say my biggest beauty regret would be trying to make myself look like what I thought would please other people. Over time I’ve learned that everyone has their own individual opinions regarding makeup; how much is too much or too little, trends, styles etc. I now understand that there is no right or wrong when it comes to makeup. You simply have to do what makes you happy.
TOP 5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS
I’ve been using Josie Maran’s 100% Pure Argan Oil Light for a little over a year now as a replacement for my moisturizer and facial serum. My skin is really affected by seasonal weather changes and as mentioned earlier I have fairly sensitive skin that is prone to chronic adult acne. I love how this oil hydrates my combination skin and smoothens out my complexion without causing me to breakout. This is the first product I apply to my skin when I wake up in the morning. I put a few drops of oil on my face with the dropper and then use a brush to distribute the product on my face. Doing this before putting on my makeup will usually give me a dewy glow for the rest of the day. Some days I use it unaccompanied by other products to give me a nice, fresh-faced look. I will typically reapply the oil after I shower and before I go to bed. The versatility of this Argan oil is another thing I love about it. It helps speed up the healing process of my acne spots and I can also use it after styling my hair to tame frizz and add shine. I’ve purchased this product multiple times and I find the large 120 ml bottle usually lasts me about 6 months. For all the uses I get out of this oil, I find I get great bang for my buck. I couldn’t recommend this enough!
I really enjoy wearing my Bite Beauty Lipsticks, particularly their Amuse Bouche line. Bite Beauty uses a lot of natural ingredients and their lipsticks smell of citrus extracts, which make them distinctive amongst other lipstick lines. I purchased the Amuse Bouche lipstick vault where there are 38 mini lipstick bullets varying from very bold shades to neutrals and nudes. I find myself gravitating to the deep bold berry tone of the shade ‘eggplant’. In terms of hydration, the lipsticks vary from colour to colour. I find some shades need a little bit of balm before application whereas some do not need any at all. When it comes to lip liner, I personally like the look of a soft blend when it comes to lipstick and rarely use a liner with these. Once applied, I find these lipsticks stay on through drinking coffee and water without cracking or discoloration, but typically require some touching up after a meal. Bite lipsticks can be found at your local Sephora but there are also Lip Labs in Toronto, New York, San Jose and San Francisco where you can custom create colours and take them home all in the same day.
Being of Chinese descent, I always found it difficult to define my eyes without looking too made up. My MAC 3 Lash False Eyelashes provide me with very natural looking, everyday dramatic eyes. I believe I first started using these lashes in high school, so over 10 years now. I’ve tried cheaper as well as more expensive false eyelash brands but have found my MAC lashes provide me with the best quality for the price. That being said, these false eyelashes are on the harder side in terms of application. The band where the eyelashes sit are made to bend easily, providing more comfort for the wearer. However, this makes it a bit more difficult to get them to stick and stay right above the lash line. Depending on your application abilities, you may need to carry glue and a touch up during the day. I tend to be able to stretch a pair of these eyelashes anywhere from 10-14 applications as long as I can keep minimal glue residue on the band and off the lashes themselves. It is worth the extra effort though, these photograph so beautifully; I love that something simple like a pair of false eyelashes can make me feel beautiful and confident.
I’ve been using Murad’s Acne Spot Treatment for approximately 8 months now. I find this acne spot treatment works best to prevent pimples and cystic acne in its early stages. It takes about 72 hours to see results on a blemish. I find other products with higher percentages of salicylic acid work faster but end up excessively drying out the skin, which can take a long time to recover from. Murad uses sulfur as its main active ingredient, which my skin likes much better. A 15ml tube usually lasts me 6 months. Using this product is a great way to manage acne without having to break the bank.
I use my Marc Jacobs Beauty Lip Lock Moisture Balm like so: apply generously, indulge, repeat, and purchase again. It’s a game changer for those affected with dry, peeling lips during the winter season. This balm has classy packaging, a minty scent, SPF protection and glides on buttery smooth. I use this product to prep my lips prior to any lipstick application and as an overnight lip treatment. It is on the pricier side, as it is a luxury lip balm. However, for those of you who lust over designer brands and beautiful design, this is an essential for your makeup bag.”
