BEAUTY INTERVIEW: Top 5 with Julia Johnson

Montreal, Quebec

“My interest in beauty began once I started to break out for the first time about two years ago. I never really had pimples or acne when I was a teen so I guess I didn’t feel the need to take care of my skin as much as I should have back then. Now, I’ve become a bit obsessed with skincare. My first memory of makeup would be wearing black eyeliner along my waterline in high school. Looking back, this was not the best look for my smaller, almond-shaped eyes. It made them look so beady and small! But hey, if Avril Lavigne was wearing it, so could I.

My beauty style is definitely minimal. Let’s just say I rarely used to wash my makeup off before I went to bed, especially if I would come home late. Now, I force myself to wash off my makeup every night before I go to bed. I also swear by under eye cream. The best beauty advice I’ve ever received is to use it, even in your 20’s.

During the fall and winter seasons, I use James Read’s Self Tan Express Glow Mask in the morning after I finish applying my regular moisturizer. I would look lifeless without it. I have very fair skin and it tends to look almost transparent at times during the winter. I love how this product gives my face a natural golden glow without looking like I’m auditioning for the next season of Jersey Shore. It has a gel-like texture that won’t leave your skin feeling heavy or oily, is free of the offensive scent that many other self-tanning products tend to have, and doesn’t stain clothing either. I have learned, however, that it’s very important to exfoliate my face and neck at least twice a week when I’m using this product. If I don’t, this tanner can make my skin look streaky.

I wear Charlotte Tilbury’s Cheek to Chic Blush every day. Before I found this product I never wore blush because any product I tried tended to look unnatural on my skin. I find this blush unique because somehow it is a powder that mimics a cream; it is so silky and natural looking. It highlights your cheeks and gives you that après-ski rosy, and radiant cheek glow that lasts all day. Each blush comes with two complementary tones; the outside ring is a softer, lighter color made to brush onto your cheekbones and the center is a bolder, very pigmented color for the apples of your cheeks. I get such great value for the price with this product. I would consider this my favorite makeup discovery in a long time. You would not regret this purchase. Plus, it comes in 6 different shades! I should be a spokesperson for Charlotte Tilbury. I love it.

Now that I’ve started using a pea-sized dab of Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer in the morning and at night, I am confident I will never need to purchase another winter moisturizer ever again. It smells like lavender and hydrates my skin when it’s dry and cold. For a thick and rich moisturizer, it feels lightweight on my skin and somehow manages to never feel sticky or greasy after an application. The first time I used it, I put too much on and it did take a bit of time before fully absorbing, but I find the pea-sized amount I use absorbs super quickly. A jar of this moisturizer gives me such good value – it’s only $35! This is a luxury moisturizer for the price of a drugstore cream. I anticipate it lasting me a while considering how little of it I need to use per application. You can order Glossier products from their website. Sadly, they do not ship to Canada yet. My boyfriend recently went to NYC so I had my order shipped to his hotel. I follow Glossier on Instagram, and really, everyone should as well because their feed is so visually appealing. I’m a sucker for nice packaging. Glossier could literally put sh*t in their gorgeous packaging and I would buy it. Luckily for me, all their products are amazing!

I use Glossier’s Superbounce Serum every morning; it’s perfect to wear under makeup. The milky texture of this serum leaves my skin soft and silky-smooth without any oily residue. 2 drops of this product is all I need to give my skin a boost in the morning. Sometimes when I wake up my skin can be puffy and red. I find this serum reduces that redness and puffiness significantly and faster than other oils or serums I have tried. It definitely helps my skin ‘bounce-back’ to its normal self, especially after a rough night.

My sister recommended the Agave Lip Mask by Bite Beauty to me after I told her my lips were in dire need of hydration. I’ve been using this lip mask for over year now and my lips are never dry, even throughout the winter. I apply it every night before I go to bed and throughout the day if I feel my lips need some hydration, which honestly is rare because this product hydrates so well throughout the night. I find if I overuse most other lip balms, my lips tend to get used to them and start to dry out; that is not the case with this lip mask. Usually, one application will leave my lips soft all day. I buy this product from Sephora and one tube lasts me approximately 3 months.”
