ON THE BEST BEAUTY ADVICE
“I think the best piece of beauty advice I have ever received is to take good care of your skin and to remove my makeup before bed. I remember reading an article as a teenager around the early 2000’s Dukes of Hazard time period, where Jessica Simpson said that no matter how tired she was, she would always take off her makeup. I get so much satisfaction from removing my makeup at the end of the day and then applying a serum and moisturizer that makes my skin plump and supple the next morning.
ON HER BEAUTY REGRETS
In terms of beauty regrets, I think we have all worn things we wish we hadn’t. When I first started to wear makeup, I would constantly be drawn to forest green and dark gray eye shadows. I also had a light purple cream eyeshadow that had a doe foot application and it did nothing but crease. I also had a tendency to like very glossy lips. While the way I apply my makeup has since evolved – thank god! – it was a good learning experience and in my defense, there were no beauty gurus on YouTube explaining how to apply the shadows!
TOP 5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS
I have been using The Body Shop’s Aloe Gentle Facial Wash for nearly 10 years now. I have dry, sensitive skin and need a gentle cleanser that doesn’t irritate my face. Ever since the first time I gave this a try I’ve never looked back. I make sure to always have several of these on backup and even have a bottle of this facial wash at my in-laws just in case I forget mine. I use this cleanser on a daily basis, usually during my evening shower or bath. If I have a lot of makeup on I’ll use some micellar water to break down my makeup first, but if I’m not wearing a lot I just use this cleanser. Typically, I’ll gently massage two to three pumps of product on my face and then use a face cloth or put my face under the shower head to rinse it off. I’m sure I look nothing like the Neutrogena advertisements [laughs]. I love the simplicity of this facial wash. It’s easy to use, doesn’t have a harsh smell and doesn’t sting when you use it. At $16 this product is affordable and does exactly what its intended to do without stripping the skin.
Like many products I discover, I came across Lancome’s Advanced Genefique Youth Activating Serum on YouTube. The ever popular and beautiful queen of reviews, Tati Westbrook, mentioned this in one of her ‘Empties’ videos. After I heard her talk about how amazing this product was I knew I had to go get this little guy. This serum has been a total game changer skincare wise. I’ve used one pump of this product every night before bed for about a year now. My moisturizer penetrates into my skin so much better when I use this serum and it leaves my skin very well hydrated and so much brighter. One bottle of this luxurious product lasts me about 6 months. The packaging is beautiful and it looks amazing on my vanity. Esthetics aside, this product works.
Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask does an amazing job of putting moisture back into my skin. I love applying a thin layer of this tropical smelling face mask on a Sunday evening and letting it sink in overnight. It can feel a little tacky to touch when it’s first applied but you would be surprised how comfortable it is to wear and quickly your skin drinks this up. When I wake up in the morning, my skin is rejuvenated, hydrated and bright – a perfect Monday morning pick-me-up! Another option is to leave it on for 30 minutes. However, I think it’s most effective when I let it sink in overnight. I have tried many masks but none compare to this one, especially when we are talking about hydration. Currently, sheet masks are all the rage. I have tried a few and while I do like them, I don’t find them comfortable to wear. I have yet to find a sheet mask that doesn’t slide around my face and make a mess. You have a lot of control with this facemask. You can apply as much or as little of this product as you need.
Lack of hydration and sensitive skin is something I struggle with, and Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Eye Cream caters to both of these needs perfectly. I purchased this product off a recommendation by Shaaanxo, a talented beauty YouTuber from New Zealand. I have used this cream for a couple of years now and love that it is a no fuss product. To use, I take the smallest amount of it with my ring finger and rub it underneath my eyes before bed. It’s a thick consistency but it sinks in quickly. Since you need so little product a pot of this moisturizer can last me at least 8 months.
Becca Jaclyn Hill Collection Champagne Splits Shimmering Skin Perfector Mineral Blush is a cult favourite and for good reason. The colour payoff is incredible. Flowerchild is my current go-to blush – I use it every day to get naturally looking rosy cheeks. I rely on the Champagne Pop highlighter if I’m going out or filming for my YouTube Channel to give me that healthy glowing skin from within look. This highlighter also works perfectly as an inner corner highlight or even an eyeshadow if you’re pressed for time. Over the years I’ve learned that you are going to have to pay a bit more for good quality beauty product. Yes, drugstore dupes exist for some products but I haven’t seen a highlighter from the drugstore that can do what the Becca highlighter can do. I haven’t hit pan with this highlighter yet and I don’t think I will for some time. This product is well worth the price for me.”
