A few months ago I had the pleasure of visiting the cutest little store in the heart of The Hydrostone Market in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon entering Earth Goddess, instantly I found my senses stimulated and curiosity stirred. A plethora of handcrafted goods and beautiful artisanal jewelry glimmered against the backdrop of the store’s calming minimalist aesthetic, and store owners Sandy McInnis and Shannon MacGregor greeted me with smiles and warmth that immediately made me feel at home. Full disclosure, I am a bit of a hippie in that I am open to concepts karma, positive energy, intuition and all that fun stuff, so I felt right in my element in Earth Goddess.
As I resisted the urge to touch and hold every pretty piece I saw, I was drawn to the table in the centre of the store, which held a wide assortment of gemstones and jewelry. At the time of my visit, I had recently found out that I was expecting. I wanted to find a couple stones to have in my purse/put on my bedside table/wear to keep positive juju going, because as I have learned over the last 33 weeks of pregnancy it’s very easy to stress out and worry about every, little, thing baby related – especially when you’re a Type A personality that likes to be in as much control of anything you can be.
Luckily for me, Sandy and Shannon were exceptionally well versed in all the products and pieces they carry and provided me with a care package filled with some of their favourite pregnancy (and non-pregnancy) related goodies, many of which continue to be a staple in my daily routine. Today I am happy to share my favourties with you!
My absolute most favourite product I got from Earth Goddess would have to be the Luna Balm in ‘calm’. This handmade product has evolved into a head-to-toe body butter after originally starting off as a diaper cream for the baby of its creator’s sensitive skin. With ingredients like calendula, chamomile and lavender infused coconut oil, pure beeswax, organic sesame oil, melaleuca and vitamin e oil, not only does this balm spread like a dream but it smells heavenly and has a very soothing and meditative quality to it. You need the tiniest bit of product to get excellent coverage. As I am also a Physiotherapist by profession, I also find this balm to be very therapeutic and well received by my patients. There is another Luna Balm in ‘flush’ that I regret not picking up, which works as an all natural pain relieving cream. It would be like an A535 or Tiger Balm but without all the icky chemicals. I will not let myself run-out of this product. That is a guarantee!
Humble Burdock Farms’ Herbal Bath Tea in Meadow Mint has to be one of the neatest bath soaks I have come across in a while. Essentially, it is a tea bag for your bath – how cool is that?! You put the handmade mixture of Epsom salts, homegrown herbs and flowers into the provided muslin-cloth bag and steep it in your tub as you would a cup of tea. Alternatively, you can use the mixture directly on your skin as a body scrub. As with all of Earth Goddess’ locally sourced handmade products, this bath tea smells amazing and at $15 makes a great gift for others or a guilt-free treat for yourself. The subtle scent from this soak is a welcome change from a lot of the artificially scented products out in the mainstream market. As a preggo it’s nice to have product options that don’t make you question whether or not it’s safe to use for you and your baby.
Ah, a girl and her gemstones. While exploring the vast stone and jewelry collection at Earth Goddess, I was drawn to this cute little bracelet made by Shannon, who also happens to be the in-house jeweler for the store. It is said that the gemstones you need in your life are the ones you are instinctively drawn to. At the time of my visit, I was a bit of a worry-wart regarding my pregnancy. Based on the properties of these stones, it made complete sense why I knew I didn’t want to leave Halifax without this bracelet! The Hematite and Pyrite stones are protective stones that ward of negative energy, Black Tourmaline and Smokey Quartz disperses stress, tension, negative energy, and are said to keep you grounded and positive – just what I needed. When I put the bracelet on it was a little too big, as I have the tiniest baby wrists known to mankind. Luckily, Shannon being the amazing jeweler she is, said it would be no problem for her to customize the bracelet and shorten it to the perfect size for me – another Earth Goddess perk!
I picked up three other stones at the suggestion of Sandy that she said were great for an expectant mom as well. Moonstone, Rose Quartz, and Amethyst. I put these beauties on my bedside table, and on my more anxious nights, I might even fall asleep with the Rose Quartz or Amethyst under my pillow. I just love the idea of the positivity around these stones, and figure no harm can be done by them, so, why not!
This shop is a true gem in the heart of the Halifax Hydrostone Market. My only grievance is not being able to visit it regularly in person due to the fact I am an Ottawa resident. If you don’t live nearby – fret not! Earth Goddess offers flat rate shipping of $5 Canada-wide. Additionally, it just so happens that today, October 28th, 2017 is their one year anniversary and they are offering 20% off their entire store. I have already called to place my order and am waiting for a call-back to finalize my details (they are super busy today, obviously!) You can browse some of their merchandise on their beautiful Instagram feed, or on their Facebook page. Earth Goddess has an online shop coming soon, so be sure to follow them on social media for updates. Happy shopping!
