ON HER EVOLVING RELATIONSHIP WITH BEAUTY
The best beauty advice I’ve ever received is to drink lots of water. I’m a big fan of juices, sodas, and lattes and definitely notice a huge difference in my skin when I cut those things out and simply drink water. Everything feels better and it shows on my skin.
I went through a period where I thought you weren’t a real person unless you had a tan, so to compensate for my milky ginger complexion I would load on the bronzer and end up looking like an orange. I also regret my Avril Lavigne phase where heavily lined raccoon eyes were my jam. It was not a good look for me and I cringe when I see pictures of myself with heavy black eyeliner in my waterline.
I definitely regret ever cutting my own bangs. It completely changed the shape of my face and not in a good way. They were short and crooked and took forever to grow back.
I use my Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Illuminating Beauty Balm around three to four times per week and I love it. I don’t wear foundation and work from home, so I only use this BB cream plus a little bit concealer when I have to go somewhere. This BB cream provides me with light coverage, evens out my skin tone and gives me a dewy look that makes it look like I’m not wearing any makeup at all. I love this product because it’s not super heavy and I can use it on its own when my skin is looking good and I can use it with concealer when I have breakouts. I have combination skin that borders on acne-prone (raise the roof for adult acne!) and I’ve gone through lots of different foundations. All I need to do to apply this product is take a nickel or dime-sized dollop onto my fingers and blend it all over my face the same way you would a moisturizer. If I’m being totally honest, as much as I enjoy makeup, I’m a very lazy makeup person. I don’t like using sponges or brushes because I’m often putting on makeup as I’m running out the door. It has to be easy for me. I must say what I love about this BB cream is how natural it looks. I hate looking like I’m wearing a ton of makeup and often times I find other foundations can look a little caked on and unnatural on my skin. Plus this is so easy to apply; it doesn’t get much better that for me.
I love using my Ole Henriksen Walnut Complexion Scrub if I feel a breakout coming on. It does a really great job sloughing off dead skin cells and allowing my skin to breathe a little better. I love its fresh scent and how it leaves my face feeling clean but not tight. I tend to use this scrub in the shower once or twice a week. It’s super easy to use, however, the granules can be tough to clean out of the sink, which is why I like to use it in the shower. To use this scrub I take a dime-size dollop of product and very gently rub it in circles around my face. In terms of strength, this exfoliant is definitely on the harsher side. I used to be a huge fan of the St. Ives Apricot Scrub until a dermatologist told me that the shards of apricot actually cause tiny micro-abrasions to the skin. This cleanser is along the same lines as the apricot scrub, but one step down or so in terms of intensity. I also get great value for the price with this product. I anticipate my current container should last me anywhere between 8-9 months at the rate I’ve been using it.
Eminence’s Eight Green Whip Moisturizer is great for my hormonal combination skin. The ingredients are natural, which I love, and they are specifically designed to balance and nourish the skin. I’ve used a ton of Eminence products before, they are my absolute favourite brand, but I only started using the Eight Greens Moisturizer a couple months ago. This particular one came to me in a sample package with a bunch of other products and masks to fight my two biggest skincare concerns: aging and hormonal acne. Once I finished the sample, I had to go back to Oresta and buy the full size. I use this both in the morning and at night. The cream is fairly thick and you need to give it a little massage for it to absorb fully. I usually mix it with a complementing Eminence serum and dilute it a little with water to make it absorb a little faster. The one thing that makes me sad about Eminence products is how pricey they are. However, I do find they are worth the cost because their ingredients are organic and they really deliver results. Many moisturizers I’ve used in the past have had really strong chemical smells to them, which I’m not a fan of. This moisturizer smells natural and I feel comfortable using it around my eyes. One jar usually lasts me about 3-4 months. It should be noted that I’m a bit of a moisture addict and could probably use less and get longer use out of it.
Givenchy’s Le Rouge Lipstick in ‘beige mousseline’ is my favourite shade of lipstick. I love that it’s understated but beautiful, hydrating, and the perfect nude for my skin tone. Typically I’m a Burt’s Bees kind of girl, but this is my go-to for when I want to look put-together and feel like an adult. I don’t need a lip liner with this lipstick, which totally falls in line with my lazy girl instincts. I simply apply the lipstick and run out the door. I may reapply it a couple times throughout the night or day, but since it’s a nude colour, it’s not super noticeable when it fades. In terms of value for the price, I’m not quite sure what the retail price of this actually is. I purchased this tube from a sample sale at a fashion magazine where I was doing an internship. Imagine, a giant table full of makeup and hair products and everything being $2! I know this will probably make makeup artists cringe, but I’ve had this tube for about 3 or 4 years. So I’m sure its retail price is definitely worth it.
My Lucas PawPaw Ointment serves multiple purposes. I primarily use it as a lip moisturizer, but you can also use it on burns, rashes, and other sores. I love its simplicity. It’s virtually scentless and incredibly moisturizing. I have a bad habit of licking my lips that cause them dry out really quickly. The Paw Paw Ointment is awesome because it prevents me from licking my lips while simultaneously moisturizing them. Depending on how dry my lips are feeling, I may exfoliate them and then rub the Paw Paw on my lips before bed. I also use it underneath lipsticks and have even massaged it on my cuticles for a little extra hydration. As far as I know, you can only get this in Australia. Luckily, a tube can last me over a year and I have friends who travel there often to bring me back more!”– As told to the GRR
